A wide-flange steel column receives a cap plate welded to its top flanges and web. The cap plate thickness is one-half inch for W10 or W8 sections and seven-eighths inch for W14 or W12 sections unless otherwise noted. A three-eighths inch fillet weld is specified typically at the flange, while a weld equal to half the web thickness is specified typically at the web. A shear tab is provided where it occurs to connect framing members.
