An HSS column top connects to a beam using a cap plate and a shear tab where it occurs. The cap plate thickness is three-eighths of an inch at HSS6x6 or smaller columns, and one-half of an inch at HSS7x7 or larger columns unless otherwise noted. A weld detail specifies a size equal to the column thickness minus one-eighth of an inch at the cap plate, with typical web welds sized at half the web thickness.
