A steel beam connects to the strong axis of a steel column using an ASTM A572 Grade 50 stiffener plate with a thickness equal to the beam flange thickness plus one quarter inch, aligned with the top of the beam flange. A three eighth inch plate is used typically, and the column extends three quarters of an inch above the beam flange at the roof. A weld access hole is provided per AISC 360 typically, with five sixteenth inch fillet welds. Standard round holes are provided in the beam and shear plate for bolts, with size and quantity determined per plan.
