A hollow structural section column receives a one-quarter-inch thick cap plate attached with a one-eighth-inch perimeter fillet weld. A structural beam frames into the column with a three-eighth-inch connection plate utilizing standard holes and centered on the beam layout. A diagonal brace intersects the assembly at a work point four inches below the beam centerline, connecting through a gusset plate welded to the column and beam. Centerlines for the column, beam, and brace establish the working geometry.
