Steel stiffener and continuity plates are welded between the flanges of a wide-flange beam or column. The continuity plate thickness is sized to the flange thickness plus one-eighth inch minimum. Fillet welds sized to five-eighths of the continuity plate thickness attach the plates on three sides. Stiffener plate connections at the continuity plate, main plate, and web z-region follow specific engineering notes.
