An upper hollow structural section column bears onto a lower hollow structural section column of matching size, separated by a half-inch ASTM A572 Grade 50 steel plate. A complete joint penetration weld secures the plate to the lower column shaft, while a five-sixteenths-inch fillet weld connects the upper column to the plate. The splice is detailed at the floor level defined by the top of metal deck with concrete fill and a passing steel beam per plan.
