A circular penetration is cut into the web of a structural steel beam and reinforced with top plate and bottom plate elements sized per schedule. Side plates are connected to the beam web with multiple bolts, maintaining a minimum edge distance and clearance from the support or point load. Weld sizes and plate dimensions are specified per schedule, with penetration diameters limited to less than 0.7 times the beam depth. The opening is centered along the penetration centerline, positioned at a distance of d/2 unless otherwise noted on plan or schedule.
