A steel beam is supported over a hollow structural section column. The beam bears onto a three-quarter-inch by beam-width bearing plate connected to the column cap with four seven-eighth-inch diameter A307 bolts at the beam gauge. A five-sixteenth-inch stiffener plate is welded to the column with quarter-inch welds on three sides, providing web stiffening. An incoming beam connects via a shear tab, leaving a four-inch clearance to the column centerline. A note permits the contractor to extend the incoming beam shear tab plate and weld it to the bottom flange in lieu of the stiffener plate, while another note specifies using a weld instead of bolts if the beam flange width is less than six inches.
