An HSS 8x8 hollow structural section splice connection located beneath existing roof plywood is reinforced with a 1/2-inch plate at the bottom of the HSS and a 1/2-inch by 6-inch plate on each side of the HSS. A one-inch maximum gap is maintained at the joint between the aligned structural members. Fillet welds sized at one-quarter inch are specified on three sides typically. A project note dictates that the splice shall occur as required with a minimum HSS length of eight feet.
