A full-height three-eighths-inch stiffener plate is welded to each side of the wide flange beam web unless otherwise noted, with one-quarter-inch plates permitted for W16 or shallower beams having flanges five-eighths of an inch thick or thinner. The stiffener plates are welded on three sides with size variations specified as three-sixteenths-inch at the stiffener plate and five-sixteenths-inch at the web or flange over three-quarters of an inch thick. Corners of the stiffener plates feature typical 'k' by 'k' chamfers to clear the beam fillet radii. A supported cross beam frames into the webbed assembly where indicated per plan.
