A structural steel beam connects at the top of a column flange using a horizontal cap plate welded to the top of the column. The cap plate thickness is specified as the greater of either flange thickness TF1 plus one-quarter inch or flange thickness TF2 plus one-quarter inch, with a one-inch minimum. Continuity plates are installed inside the column web, matching the larger of TF1 or TF2. Shear tabs are provided where indicated to connect the incoming beam webs with bolts. Weld symbols specify the connection of the cap plate to the top and bottom flanges.
