A structural steel column connects to a supporting steel beam using a welded base plate secured by four anchor bolts sized per the structural column schedule. The steel beam web is reinforced directly beneath the column load with stiffener plates sized to match the beam flange width and welded with typical fillet welds. The column end and base plate are finished and fitted to bear per AISC standards. A maximum clearance of one-half inch is maintained above the toe of the fillet. Additional larger plates are used if required by incoming beam connections.
