Steel beam web penetrations are restricted to the middle third of the beam depth and must maintain a minimum distance of two times the beam depth from supports, edges of other openings, or concentrated loads from intersecting beams or columns above. Individual penetrations are limited to a maximum diameter of six inches typical and must be located within the middle third of the beam span. Spacing between adjacent openings and clear distances to intersecting members are governed by dimensional limits relative to beam depth D.
