Rectangular web penetrations in wide flange beams are reinforced with four total plates placed on each side of the web. The penetration depth is limited to a maximum of one-third of the beam depth, and the penetration length is limited to a maximum equal to the beam depth. Reinforcing plates match the wide flange beam grade and extend horizontally by twice the penetration width beyond the opening on each side, with a typical half-inch offset from the flange. Section A-A indicates the sleeve welded to the web with fillets sized to half the flange thickness.
