A reinforced concrete shear wall boundary element terminates at a maximum four-foot six-inch door opening with specialized confinement reinforcement. The three-foot wide boundary zone contains fourteen number five longitudinal bars spaced evenly across seven equal spaces. Transverse confinement consists of number four closed ties and number four crossed ties spaced at five inches on center. The main wall reinforcement continues per wall elevation and refers to sheet S5.05. Clear cover to the ties is one and one-half inches typical.
