A vertical step occurs in a reinforced concrete mat slab foundation. Top and bottom reinforcing bar mats run continuously through the upper and lower slab levels, transitioning along the sloped step. Reinforcement at the step matches the size and spacing of the top rebar mat per plan. A Z-bar ties the top and bottom levels together at the vertical transition, featuring a three-foot minimum lap splice. Contractors are given the option to provide a continuous bar in lieu of the standard lap splice along the bottom mat. An overframing slab is included where it occurs above the stepped transition.
