Steel beams connect to a structural steel column utilizing a shear plate welded to the column web and bolted to the beam web with three seven-eighths-inch-diameter erection bolts, reduced to two bolts for W8 or W10 shapes. The shear plate thickness equals the beam web thickness plus one-eighth inch typically, maintaining a minimum depth of two-thirds the beam depth with a one-inch minimum vertical clearance. Top and bottom beam flanges are connected to the column with complete joint penetration welds and include weld access holes. Stiffener plates matching fifty KSI steel with a thickness equal to the greater beam flange thickness plus one-eighth inch are provided at the column. Fillet welds of five-sixteenth-inch size are specified on three sides where indicated.
