A typical braced frame column splice utilizes complete joint penetration demand critical welds at the column flanges and webs. Tapered flange transitions are provided per AWS D1.8 clause 4.2 to accommodate width or thickness transitions. Steel weld backing is permitted to remain, while weld tabs must be removed in accordance with AWS D1.8 clause 6.16. The splice location is positioned four feet above the top of the concrete slab unless noted otherwise.
