Dimensional limits and reinforcement requirements govern wood double top plate notching in shear walls. Eight 16d common nails are required on each side of the notch, with four nails per plate. Where the notch depth exceeds one inch, a ten-gauge strap matching the width of the double top plate must be provided. Drilled holes are subject to specific edge distance and spacing restrictions based on the plate depth D. Notches greater in depth than D divided by five require an anchor bolt on each side of the notch, and no more than one notch is permitted in every twelve feet along the shear wall.
