A hollow structural section column bears directly onto a five-eighths-inch thick bearing plate that is sized at least one-half inch wider than the column or beam, whichever is greater. The column is secured to the bearing plate using four five-eighths-inch diameter A307 bolts at standard beam gauge with one and one-half inch edge distances. The assembly is welded to the supporting steel beam sized per plan with three-sixteenths-inch fillet welds. Three-eighths-inch stiffener plates are welded to each side of the beam web aligned with the centerline of the hollow structural section column using five-sixteenths-inch fillet welds.
