A wide-flange steel column is topped with a cap plate measuring one-half inch thick at W10 or W8 shapes, or seven-eighths inch thick at W14 or W12 shapes, unless otherwise noted. The cap plate is welded to the column flanges with a three-eighths inch fillet weld typical at the flange, and to the column web with a weld sized to half the web thickness typical at the web. A shear tab is provided where it occurs to receive framing members. The connection details transfer gravity loads from framing beams into the vertical structural column.
