A structural steel shape is embedded within a heavy reinforced concrete pier, tied with horizontal and vertical steel reinforcing bars. Eight additional number 10 vertical bars and twenty-two number 18 vertical bars reinforce the pier section alongside typical additional number 7 vertical bars. Shear studs are welded to the flanges of the encased steel column to ensure composite action between the steel shape and the surrounding concrete. Concrete walls or beams frame into the sides of the pier with continuous reinforcement extending through the assembly.
