Additional loads from mechanical equipment, sprinkler pipes, and other sources are supported by open web steel joists using specified auxiliary web reinforcement and load attachment methods. Concentrated loads located more than six inches from a panel point require reinforcement with an added angle on each side of the joist, extending from the point load to the nearest panel point on the opposite chord. The reinforcing angle is sized as an L 2x2x1/8 and is welded on three sides with a 1/8-inch fillet weld, ensuring loads are removed from the joist prior to welding. Joist members must not be cut or drilled, and the joist manufacturer must account for the additional loading in the joist design.
