A structural steel column web requires specific cutouts and edge preparations to accommodate doubler plates and backing bars at moment connections. The bottom of the top flange is contoured to permit a tight fit of backing bars, while the weld access hole features a smooth transition radius with specified dimensions governed by the web thickness. Width W must be the greater of 1.5 times the web thickness or 1 1/2 inches with a plus or minus 1/4 inch tolerance, and height H must be the greater of 1.5 times the web thickness or 1 inch, not exceeding 2 inches. A minimum radius R of 3/8 inch is required at the base of the access hole, and the flange edge is beveled as required by AWS D1.8 for the selected groove weld procedure.
