A W10x49 upper steel column connects to a W10x68 lower steel column with mill surfaces to bear. A three-eighths by six by zero-foot-six-inch plate is provided on each side of the web, secured with four seven-eighths-inch diameter machine bolts that are removed after welding the flanges, with holes filled and ground smooth. The flange connection utilizes complete joint penetration welds with specific weld sizes of one-sixteenth, nine-sixteenths, and one-quarter inches, supplemented by back-gouging, filling, and grinding smooth. A note specifies that the column splice shall conform to requirements for exposed structural steel.
