This structural steel detail shows a welded gravity column splice joining upper and lower steel columns aligned along their centerlines. The connection features a complete joint penetration weld with a backing bar at the flange joint and partial penetration welds with a specified root opening for the web or splice plates. An erection plate is provided by the contractor for field positioning, though the splice plate is not designed to support erection loads alone. Centerlines of the column webs must be aligned precisely as noted.
