A diagonal brace connects to a steel beam and hollow structural section column via a one-half-inch thick gusset plate. Three-eighths-inch thick stiffener plates are welded to each side of the beam web with three-sixteenths-inch fillet welds on three sides typical. The diagonal brace maintains a one-inch clearance from the top flange of the beam. A five-sixteenths-inch fillet weld secures the beam connection at the column centerline working point.
