An HSS stair header frames into a vertical HSS post via a one-half-inch thick knife plate slotted into the header and welded to the post. The connection is secured with three seven-eighths-inch diameter A325 bolts spaced symmetrically with equal intervals. A three-eighths-inch cap plate is welded to the top of the HSS post with quarter-inch fillet welds. The HSS post size is specified per structural plans.
