The slab-on-grade recess detail shows two conditions for dropping or stepping the concrete slab: one with a total depth greater than the slab thickness and one with a depth less than the slab thickness. For the greater depth condition, a thickened concrete edge extends downward with two continuous number four reinforcing bars top and bottom, alongside number three dowels spaced at eighteen inches matching the typical slab reinforcing with a forty-eight bar diameter lap. Dowels extend horizontally into the adjacent slab matching the size and spacing of typical slab reinforcing with a forty-eight bar diameter lap. The recess width and depth are sized per plan up to a thirty-inch maximum.
