A hollow structural section column terminates with a welded cap plate scaled by column size, using a three-eighths-inch plate for HSS six-by-six or smaller and a one-half-inch plate for HSS seven-by-seven or larger unless noted otherwise. A single plate shear tab connects to the column web where required. The top of the column is set one-eighth inch below the specified elevation.
