A concrete slab over a metal deck bears on a wide flange beam sized per the structural plan. The high flute of the deck is cut out and welded directly to the top flange of the beam. Headed shear studs are welded through the deck into the beam flange to provide composite action. Slab reinforcement requires a minimum overlap of two inches, with three-quarters of an inch clearance. Additional number three longitudinal reinforcement bars are placed in the low flutes at thirty-six inches on center at the side-vented or specific deck only, maintaining one inch of clearance in the low flutes.
