Calculations specify an allowable shear stress of 20,000 PSI with field weld strength rated at 300 pounds per inch of 1/16-inch size. A 1/4-inch weld provides 1,200 pounds per inch of length for a standard splice. The allowable load for low hydrogen welds is calculated at 2,400 pounds per inch of length.
