The structural connection of a stair stringer to a thickened slab on grade foundation consists of stair stringers made of hollow structural sections measuring at least 12 by 2 by 3/16 inches or C12x20.7 channels, with flat plate stringers strictly prohibited. Concrete-filled pan treads with a 2-inch minimum thickness are provided by the stair manufacturer. A 3/16-inch minimum plate is used at the end and bearing connection, anchored to accommodate interstory drift. The thickened slab footing extends 1 foot 6 inches minimum beyond the stair on each side and is reinforced with number 4 bars top and bottom.
