A structural steel beam features a notched bottom flange with a provided radius at each inside corner for stress relief. For W30x beams, plate steel measuring 1 inch by 8 inches is welded to each side of the web, while W27x beams receive 3-4 inch by 8-inch plates. The notch dimensions vary per mechanical drawings with a minimum clearance requirement of 2 feet 0 inches. Fillet welds of 1/2 inch connect the web reinforcement plates as detailed.
