An open web steel joist supports additional concentrated loads through five designated methods and locations at the top and bottom chords. Concentrated loads located greater than 6 inches from a panel point require an added angle each side of the joist, sized as L 2x2x1/8, extending from the point load to the nearest panel point on the opposite chord with 1/8 fillet welds on 3 sides typical. Hang loads within 6 inches of upper or lower panel points, or trapeeze between any panel points. Joist members must remain uncut and undrilled, with all field welding requiring special inspection by a deputy inspector.
