A circular penetration of diameter D is centered within the web of a wide flange steel beam having a total depth H and web thickness Tw. A rectangular reinforcing plate measuring two times D by two times D is centered over the penetration on the beam web. The reinforcing plate thickness matches the beam web thickness Tw with a three-eighths inch minimum plate size. The plate is secured with five-sixteenth inch fillet welds with a field weld option around the perimeter and the interior opening. Section A-A shows the plate extending one-half inch typically beyond the penetration with a K plus one-half inch minimum clearance from the beam flange.
