A structural soldier beam is embedded within a cylindrical drill shaft backfilled with material specified in the beam sections. Timber lagging spans between the soldier beams to retain the excavation, forming an outside corner configuration. The lagging terminates at the flange of the steel beam with a minimum two-inch clearance.
