This moment connection joins a wide-flange beam to a wide-flange column using full-penetration welds at the beam flanges and a bolted shear plate at the beam web. The beam flanges are welded to the column face with a D1.8 demand critical weld, specified for both top and bottom flanges. The beam web is connected to the column via a typical shear plate, with plate thickness and bolt sizing determined by the standard bolted connection schedule. Continuity plates are required at the column web, with specific detailing referenced on sheet B111.S7.213. Backer plates must be removed after welding and the surface ground smooth where exposed to view. A beam may also occur on the opposite side of the column as indicated on the structural plans.
