Two structural transition scenarios illustrate welding details for members of unequal thickness denoted as T1 and T2. When the thicker member satisfies T1 greater than or equal to 2.5 times T2, a direct butt or fillet weld configuration applies without a tapered transition. When T1 is less than 2.5 times T2, a tapered transition profile of 2.5 to 1 connects the differing thicknesses. Fillet welds sized at 0.71 times T2 secure the connection unless noted otherwise.
