Structural steel beam web penetrations feature reinforcing plates and pipe sleeves for both round and rectangular openings. A schedule forty pipe sleeve matches the flange width for round penetrations, while rectangular openings use horizontal and vertical plates welded to the web and flanges with five-sixteenth inch fillet welds. Half-inch thick plates are positioned on each side of the beam web for reinforcement, with dimensions sized relative to the opening diameter and beam geometry. General notes restrict beam penetrations to locations specifically shown on plans or approved by the structural engineer.
