A structural steel column splice connects an upper steel column to a lower steel column located four feet above the finish floor. The assembly features a base plate welded to the upper column and a cap plate welded to the lower column, both matching the respective column flange thickness with a three-quarter inch minimum. Four seven-eighth inch diameter minimum ASTM A325 bolts secure the connection plates together. Fillet welds of five-sixteenth inch size join the plates to the column shafts, with specific instructions to omit the k-dimension weld on typical sides.
