A smaller upper steel column bears onto a larger lower steel column through a transitional cap plate. The cap plate thickness is specified as one-and-a-half inches for W8 or W10 columns, and two inches for W12 or larger columns. Half-inch by sixteen-inch stiffener plates are welded near side and far side to the web and flange joints. Fillet welds of three-eighths inch size are specified typically at the flange connections.
