The concrete steps bear directly against undisturbed earth with minimum dimension requirements for depth and horizontal run. If the excavation ravels or sloughs, the over-excavated space must be backfilled with concrete concurrently when the footing is cast. Reinforcing steel bars are placed within the concrete steps for structural integrity.
