A structural steel shape is encased within a cast-in-place concrete column pier centered on intersecting grid lines. The concrete section is reinforced with twelve number 14 vertical bars and typical additional number 5 vertical bars tied with internal and external shear reinforcement. Shear studs or anchors project from the steel section flanges into the surrounding concrete matrix.
