A structural steel beam terminating at an HSS column uses top and bottom plates bolted with two three-quarter-inch-diameter bolts each. The base plate equals the beam flange thickness or one-half inch minimum in thickness, with a width equal to the flange width or the column width plus one inch minimum, and length equal to dimension A plus three inches where applicable. Two typical stiffener plates are provided where the column above does not exist, sized at half the flange thickness or three-eighths inch minimum. A cap plate is also detailed with a length of dimension B plus three and one-half inches. A one-quarter-inch fillet weld is specified typically at the connection joints.
