A wide-flange steel column of size W10 per plan connects to a 14-inch by 12-inch by 1-inch thick steel base plate joined with a complete joint penetration weld. The base bears directly on a reinforced concrete mat slab sized per plan, which is supported by a drilled concrete pier per plan. Shear studs or embedded reinforcing extend from the column base into the concrete slab and pier assembly.
