A structural steel beam frames into a hollow structural section column using a one-half-inch thick plate matching the larger width of both members at the top and bottom flanges, fastened with three-quarter-inch diameter slip-critical bolts typically. A typical shear plate connects the beam web to the column face with two bolts. The top and bottom plates are welded to the hollow structural section column.
