A thick base plate is welded to the column flange and web using complete joint penetration welds, complemented by a gusset plate and three-quarter-inch by twelve-inch high stiffener plates welded with five-sixteenth-inch fillet welds typical. An embed plate sits below the base assembly to transfer lateral and vertical loads into the concrete foundation.
