An HSS beam frames into an HSS column using a complete joint penetration weld on the top and bottom flanges. An A572 Grade 50 plate matching the thickness of the HSS beam wall is inserted with a backing bar at the column joint. An additional HSS piece matching the column size is placed at the connection level. Backing bars are utilized for the welded joints, and plate corners may be trimmed flush where no beam frames into the column.
