A structural steel beam connects to the top of a hollow structural section column using a three-eighths-inch thick shear plate centered on each side of the HSS. The shear plate extends to accommodate an intersecting beam at the bottom flange or receives a quarter-inch stiffener plate measuring half the beam depth when no intersecting beam occurs. A three-quarter-inch diameter erection bolt secures the connection with a maximum half-inch gap permitted. Fillet welds of five-sixteenths inch secure the shear plate, and quarter-inch welds attach the stiffener plate.
